Fosfomycin is an antibiotic that is also used as a drug for the treatment of urinary tract infections. It has been used in vitro and in vivo to inhibit the growth of a wide range of microorganisms, including fungi, protozoa, bacteria, and viruses. Fosfomycin inhibits microbial growth by inhibiting DNA synthesis and cell wall synthesis. It also has antiviral activity against some human viruses. Fosfomycin is not active against bacterial spores or mycobacteria. Pharmaceutical grade fosfomycin is available as a white crystalline powder with greater than 98% purity.
