Curvularin is a cyclohexane ring that has been shown to have strong antimicrobial activity against zearalenone and other natural compounds. Curvularin binds to the dehydroascorbate reductase receptor, which is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of dehydroascorbic acid (DHA) to ascorbic acid (AA). Curvularin also binds to the transcription factor nuclear factor-κB and inhibits its activation by preventing protein-protein interaction. This inhibition leads to decreased expression of genes related to inflammation and cell proliferation. Curvularin may be used in conjunction with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for the treatment of inflammatory diseases such as arthritis.
