Description:
1-(3-chlorophenyl)imidazole is a molecule that has been shown to be an inhibitor of corrosion in the presence of hydrochloric acid. It was found to inhibit the formation of corrosion products on steel and copper surfaces by reacting with chloride to form a chlorimide. The catalytic activity of 1-(3-chlorophenyl)imidazole was found to be dependent on the electronegativity of the substituents and the charge density on the molecule. This molecule also inhibits electrochemical reactions, such as those used for corrosion protection, through its ability to scavenge electrons from metal ions.
The 1-(3-chlorophenyl)imidazole can be used as a predictive model for other imidazole derivatives, which may have similar effects on corrosion inhibition.
