Description:

5-Formyl-2-hydroxybenzamide is an antibacterial agent that belongs to the group of fluoroquinolones. It has been shown to have a high level of activity against Gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. 5-Formyl-2-hydroxybenzamide is also effective against fungi, such as Candida albicans, but is not active against Gram-negative bacteria. This drug has a hydrazide moiety that binds to the enzyme hydrazine hydrolase, which causes inhibition of protein synthesis by blocking the formation of peptide bonds in proteins. The prodrug form of this compound has been shown to have pharmacokinetic properties that are superior to those for 5-formylbenzoic acid (5FB), which does not require activation by esterases or glucuronidases for hydrolysis.
