It has been shown to produce electrophilic reactions with the aromatic ring in phenyl isothiocyanate, yielding the corresponding thiazole derivatives. The analgesic properties of this drug are due to its ability to inhibit cyclooxygenase activity. Thiazol-2-yl-acetonitrile also has elemental analysis and yields that have been extrapolated from the synthesis of various isomers. This drug can be functionalised by reacting it with methylthio groups or ethyl acetoacetate groups and can also exist as geometric isomers.
