Larixinol is a polyphenolic compound that has been extracted from Larix occidentalis bark. It has potent antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Larixinol is also the major active constituent of decidua, which is the tissue that covers the fetus during pregnancy. The chemical structures of larixinol include procyanidins, which are oligomeric proanthocyanidins with potent inhibitory activities. Larixinol inhibits fatty acid synthesis and cox-2 activity in vitro, and it has also been shown to have potential use as an anti-inflammatory drug.
