Formosanol is a lignan that has been found in the bark and leaves of Juniperus, as well as in the seeds of Sapium. Formosanol has shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor and anti-malarial properties. It also inhibits protein tyrosine phosphatases 1B (PTP1B) which are enzymes involved in signaling pathways for cell growth, differentiation and apoptosis. Formosanol can be used to control mosquito larvae populations by inhibiting the development of their digestive system. With this property, it can be used to reduce the number of mosquitoes in a given area before they become adults capable of transmitting malaria or other diseases. The seedbed method is an efficient way to use formosanol because it is not toxic to plants and does not cause any harm to the environment. Pretreating with formosanol before planting can increase germination rates by up to 100% when compared to untreated seeds.
