Filipin is a polypeptide antibiotic that is produced by the fungus Filipendula ulmaria. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antimicrobial activities. Filipin binds to ATP-binding cassette transporters in the cell membrane and prevents them from transporting cholesterol into cells. This prevents the formation of atherosclerotic lesions in the circulatory system and reduces neuronal death in experimental models. It also inhibits IL-2 receptor signaling which may be due to its ability to inhibit polymerase chain reactions. Filipin is active against a variety of bacteria that cause infectious diseases, including Escherichia coli, Shigella flexneri, Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae and Helicobacter pylori. Filipin has also been shown to have biological properties that make it an ideal model for bowel disease research.
