Triterpenoids are a group of natural products that can be found in plants, animals, and fungi. Triterpenoids are usually cyclic compounds with a tricyclic system of three isoprene units with an oxygenated functional group at one end. One such compound is 1,11-dihydroxy-1,2,6a,6b,9,9,12a-heptamethyl-10-oxo-3,4,5,6a-tetrahydrocarbazole-4a-carboxylic acid (DHTPA). DHTPA is an inhibitor of the carboxylase enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of carbamoyl phosphate to citrulline. It has been shown to inhibit HIV replication and may have potential as an antiviral drug for the treatment of AIDS.
