RO-9187 is a modified oligonucleotide that inhibits the replication and spread of hepatitis B virus. It is a nucleoside analog with a deoxycytidine kinase-inhibiting activity. RO-9187 has shown antiviral activity in vitro and in vivo against the cell culture-grown hepatitis B virus, as well as against other viruses such as HIV and herpes simplex virus. The drug is pegylated to increase its plasma half-life and reduce renal clearance, making it more suitable for chronic use. RO-9187 has been shown to be active against viral strains that are resistant to other nucleosides analogs, including lamivudine, adefovir dipivoxil, entecavir, and telbivudine.
