3-Methylidenepiperidine-2,6-dione is an unsaturated compound that has been isolated from coal tar. It is a colorless solid that melts at temperatures between 200 and 220 degrees Celsius. 3-Methylidenepiperidine-2,6-dione has been shown to be aliphatic and inorganic in nature. It is soluble in water, but insoluble in ether or chloroform. 3-Methylidenepiperidine-2,6-dione reacts with acid to form a cyclic dinitrile that hydrolyzes to form an organic acid (e.g., glutarimide) and diamide.
