Description:

Nivalenol is a mycotoxin that causes significant cytotoxicity and has been shown to have pro-apoptotic properties in vitro. The mechanism of nivalenol-induced cell death is not yet fully understood, but it may be related to its ability to alter mitochondrial membrane potential and the production of reactive oxygen species. Nivalenol also has been shown to induce matrix metalloproteinase expression, which leads to the degradation of extracellular matrix proteins. In vivo studies with animal models have shown that nivalenol can cause autoimmune diseases in mice by altering nuclear DNA and affecting protein synthesis. These effects are mediated by the inhibition of key transcription factors such as Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2).
