As part of a fat-binding protein family, apolipoprotein E plays a role in the metabolism of fats in the body through interacting with the low density lipoprotein receptor, which is involved in the catabolism of triglyceride rich lipoproteins. Apolipoprotein E is also a major component in cholesterol metabolism and is a carrier of cholesterol in the brain. Additionally when forming a complex with C1q, apolipoprotein E is an inhibitor of the classical complement pathway. The N and C terminal regions of apolipoprotein are connected by a hinge region and the C-terminal region is a hydrophobic surface made up of three alpha helices and a low density lipoprotein receptor binding site.
