Ro 61-8048 is a small-molecule drug that inhibits the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) of the α7 type. It has been shown to be effective in vivo, inhibiting neuronal death and preventing virus replication. Ro 61-8048 also prevents picolinic acid-induced glutamate release and microdialysis probes, which may be due to its effect on the phase transition temperature of polymerase chain reactions. Ro 61-8048 has shown efficacy in vitro and can be used to treat neurodegenerative diseases such as HIV dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease. The effects of Ro 61-8048 have been tested against untreated groups and those treated with pharmacological treatment. The drug was found to inhibit binding to α7 nAChRs in vitro by binding at the same site as nicotine or other agonists.
