Dolutegravir is an antiviral agent that blocks the HIV reverse transcriptase enzyme, which is necessary for viral replication. It is a sodium salt that has been shown to be active against a number of other viruses in vitro, including herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2), human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), varicella zoster virus (VZV), and hepatitis B virus. Dolutegravir inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. It binds with high affinity to human serum proteins and as a result may have long-term toxicity effects on the liver. The drug also has potential for drug interactions with other drugs that are substrates or inhibitors of CYP3A4/5 enzymes.
