Description:Mitotempol is a reactive oxygen species (ROS) generator that is used in pharmacology as a tool to study the effects of ROS on cells. Mitotempol can increase mitochondrial membrane depolarization and lead to an increase in enzyme activities, such as lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase. It also increases the size of atherosclerotic lesions and causes polymerase chain reactions, which are important in DNA replication. Mitotempol has been shown to cause neuronal death by activating a protein called p38 MAP kinase. This drug has also been found to induce skin cancer when applied topically to mice.
