23-Epi-26-deoxyactein is a natural product that has been found to have therapeutic properties against cancer. It is an inhibitor of the caspase-3 enzyme, which plays a role in cell apoptosis. The compound also inhibits the protein kinases PKC and PKD, which are involved in the phosphorylation of proteins. These inhibitory effects lead to significant cytotoxicity in various cancer cell lines, including 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and HePG2 cells. 23-Epi-26-deoxyactein was also found to be highly effective at inhibiting the growth of bladder cancer cells in culture when administered orally. This compound is metabolized into a number of metabolites, including 23-(4'-hydroxybenzoyl) actein and 23-(4'-hydroxyphenylacetyl) actein. The metabolites can be detected in urine samples as well as tumor tissue samples.
