L-Carnosine is a dipeptide consisting of β-Alanine and L-Histidine which is abundant in brain and muscles. This simple dipeptide is considered to act as an antioxidant and as a neutralizing agent for excess lactic acid generated during exercise, which can explain the elevated L-Carnosine concentration in 400m sprinter’s muscles. Additionally, the dipeptide is able to chelate copper and zinc ions, which are ubiquitous in the nervous system and are also thought to be involved in the clinical course of Alzheimer’s disease and Autistic Spectrum Disorders, although the mechanism of action is not fully understood. A study including children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder suggests that the supplementation with carnosine can significantly improve speech and behavior.
