4-Decanol is a by-product of the dry weight (DW) method for measuring fatty acids. It contains ethyl esters and methyl ketones. 4-Decanol is used in cell culture to study the effects of cancer on lung fibroblasts and to investigate the chemical structures of fatty acids. 4-Decanol has also been shown to have anticancer properties, which may be due to its effects on fatty acid synthesis or by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins.
