2,3,5,6,2',3',5',6'-Octachlorobiphenyl (2,3,5,6-OCHP) is a chlorinated biphenyl that has been used as a raw material in the manufacturing of polychlorinated biphenyls. It has been found to be an extremely toxic substance and can cause liver cancer in laboratory animals. 2,3,5,6-OCHP is found in the environment as a result of its use as a raw material and breakdown products from other chlorinated compounds. The toxicity of 2,3,5,6-OCHP depends on the type of exposure and the level of contact with humans or animals. Levels are highest in air and water near industrial sites where it was manufactured or used for other purposes. It is estimated that 2% to 5% of human exposure to 2,3,5,6-OCHP comes from air emissions from industrial sources.
