Nonane is an aliphatic hydrocarbon. It is a liquid at room temperature and has a boiling point of 126°C. Nonane is soluble in organic solvents, but not in water. Nonanenitrile can be used as an analytical method to detect human serum lipids, such as fatty acids and alkanoic acid. This chemical also has a number of industrial applications. Nonanenitrile can be used as an oxidation catalyst to produce polymers and lubricating oils, or for the production of insecticides and herbicides. In addition, nonanenitrile reacts with hydrochloric acid or trifluoroacetic acid to produce particle-free fatty acids that are used in the manufacture of soaps and detergents.
