4-Phenoxybutanenitrile is an anion that has a magnetic moment. It is produced by the reaction of phenol and butyric acid with sodium cyanide in the presence of ruthenium as a catalyst. 4-Phenoxybutanenitrile can be used for the preparation of phosphoranes, which are useful in organic synthesis. This reagent also reacts with carbonyl compounds to produce ketones. 4-Phenoxybutanenitrile can be used for the synthesis of heterocycles and organometallic compounds. It has been shown to form a 1:1 adduct with protonated alcohols, which leads to a reduction in the energy required for hydrogen transfer. At high temperatures, 4-phenoxybutanenitrile undergoes a molecular rearrangement to form 3-phenylpropiolaldehyde and benzoic acid.
