Cytisoside is a terpene that has been found in the fruit of the genus Cytisus. These compounds are usually liquid crystalline polymorphs, with fatty acids and fatty acid esters as the main components. Cytisine is believed to have potential cancer-fighting properties. Cytisine has been shown to inhibit cellular proliferation and induce apoptosis in human leukemia cells and rat brain tumor cells. It also inhibits the growth of other cancer cells, such as breast, prostate, colon, lung, and pancreatic cancers.
The cytisine compound is a product of research on fruit extracts from genus Cytisus plants that grow in Europe and Asia. The extract was found to have cytotoxic activity against some human cancer cells lines.
