Decyl ether is a bicyclic heterocycle that is used as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. It has been shown to inhibit the production of prostaglandins, which are inflammatory mediators. Decyl ether has a hydrogen bond with cationic surfactants and forms a hydrophobic surface when mixed with magnetic particles. The average diameter of decyl ether particles is about 5 micrometres, and it can be detected by FT-IR spectroscopy. Decyl ether has been shown to have an activation energy of 16 kilojoules per mole, which is higher than that for the cyclohexane molecule (9 kilojoules per mole). This indicates that decyl ether has higher reactivity than cyclohexane in terms of its chemical species.
