Picraline is an indole alkaloid that inhibits uptake of compounds by the cell. It is a potent inhibitor of sodium potassium-ATPase. Picraline has significant cytotoxicity and, in particular, causes a tail-flick response in mice. This drug also has antinociceptive properties and has been shown to have some analgesic effects in mice. The hydrochloride salt of picraline is made by reacting picraline with hydrochloric acid and then crystallizing the product from water with sodium carbonate. Picraline can be used as an antigen for immunohistochemical staining of gliomas, which are tumors that arise from the glial cells of the central nervous system.
