Monoelaidin is a monoolein-based biocompatible polymer that can be used as a drug carrier. It has been shown to have a phase transition temperature of about 37°C, which allows it to dissolve in the body at physiological temperature. This property also makes it suitable for use in pharmaceutical formulations such as controlled release formulations and liposomal preparations. Monoelaidin adsorbs sodium ions and other cations with high affinity, making it an excellent candidate for ion-exchange applications. The polymer is completely soluble in glycerol or water and has been shown to form bilayers, which are lipid membranes that are important for cell structure and function. Monoelaidin is synthesized by the reaction of oleic acid with ethylene oxide and propylene oxide, forming the ester linkage between two molecules of propylene glycol. Disulfide bonds are formed during this process, which produce crystalline phases that can be used as experimental models for disulf
