Description:Methyl 6(Z)-octadecenoate is a petroselinic acid that is also known as hexadecanoic acid. It has been used in the production of esters, fatty acids, and biodiesel. Hydrogenation of methyl 6(Z)-octadecenoate yields a mixture of methyl 9-octadecenoate and methyl 10-octadecenoate; the hydrogenated product can be converted to biodiesel by metathesis reactions. Methyl 6(Z)-octadecenoate reacts with eugenol to form methyl octadecanoate, which can be further oxidized to pentacosanoic acid. The viscosity of this compound was found to be dependent on its concentration. This compound's reactivity was determined by silico analysis and proton NMR spectroscopy.
