DL-chloramphenicol is a natural antibiotic and antiviral agent. It inhibits the growth of microbes by inhibiting protein synthesis, which leads to cell death. DL-chloramphenicol prevents viral replication by interfering with the synthesis of viral proteins. This drug is used as an antimicrobial agent in medicine, chemotherapy, and animal husbandry. DL-chloramphenicol also has antifungal activity against some fungi. DL-chloramphenicol is not active against bacteria that produce beta-lactamases or against most strains of mycobacteria.
