5-Methyl-2-phenylpyridine is a phenylpyridine derivative that is used as a ligand in coordination chemistry. It can be synthesized from formaldehyde and acetonitrile with the addition of silver trifluoromethanesulfonate. 5-Methyl-2-phenylpyridine has been shown to bind to metal ions such as nickel, copper, and zinc by forming dianionic complexes. This compound has photophysical properties that are sensitive to pH and metal ion concentration, which can be modified by changing the solvent or adding additives like formaldehyde or zeolites. 5-Methyl-2-phenylpyridine is also used as an intermediate for the synthesis of other compounds.
