Product Information
- Dodecanamide, N-methyl-
- N-Methyllauramide
- N-Methyllaurylamide
N-Methyldodecanamide is a surfactant that is used in the production of biodiesel. It can be synthesized from dodecanoyl chloride and methanol, which are both commercially available. Dodecanoyl chloride is an organic solvent that has an activation energy of 17.0 kJ/mol, while methanol has a molecular weight of 32.04 g/mol and a boiling point of 64.5°C at 760 mmHg. The reaction mixture is heated to 100°C, and the mixture becomes fluid with increased surface area after it reaches a lamellar phase. This is due to the molecule's functional groups (i.e., hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tail). N-Methyldodecanamide has been shown to increase the fluidity of algal cell membranes, which may allow for easier extraction of polysaccharides for use as biofuel feedstock or food additive.
