5-Hydroxy-1-methoxyxanthone (5-HMX) is a methylating agent that has been used in the synthesis of coumarin derivatives. 5-HMX was used to produce mesua, a natural product found in the heartwood of Mesua ferrea, which exhibits anti-cancer effects. 5-HMX can be used for the synthesis of dichloromethane extract. This extract inhibits cancer cells and is used in x-ray crystallography studies on cancer. It also has been shown to have heartwood properties and inhibit cladosporium cucumerinum, an organism from the genus Cladosporium.
