3,3'-Bis(phenyl)-1,1'-bi-2-naphthol is an enantiomerically pure chiral ligand that can be used as a catalyst in oxidative coupling reactions. The compound is prepared by the reaction of phenylmagnesium bromide with iodomethane in presence of toluene and oxygen. 3,3'-Bis(phenyl)-1,1'-bi-2-naphthol can be used as a ligand to form metal complexes with a variety of metals including Cu(I), Ni(II), Co(III), Pd(II), Pt(IV) and Au. This compound has been found to catalyze the oxidative coupling of methylated benzaldehydes and various alkyl halides.
