7-ketocholesterol-d7 is a radiolabeled form of 7-ketocholesterol, which is an oxidation product of cholesterol. It is used in clinical practice to measure the activity and progression of cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX), a rare inherited disorder that causes inflammation in the brain and connective tissue. The radionuclide has been shown to inhibit tumor cell function and oxysterols have been shown to have bone cancer prevention effects. 7-ketocholesterol-d7 can be used as a biomarker for CTX because it accumulates in high concentrations in cerebrospinal fluid, plasma samples, and faeces. Microenvironmental factors such as cholesterol levels also affect its concentration.
