PE859 is a small molecule that inhibits the activity of the enzyme beta-site amyloid precursor protein cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1). It has been shown to reduce plaque formation and ameliorate symptoms in an Alzheimer's disease mouse model. PE859 also has antiviral properties, which have been demonstrated using a cell culture system and microscopy studies. The mechanism of action for its antiviral properties is not known, but may be related to its ability to inhibit BACE1 activity.
