Description:Thrombin is the main effector of the coagulation cascade- it is a serine protease. Thrombin binds to active protease activated receptor 1 (PAR-1) which belongs to a subfamily of G-protein coupled receptors (GPCR). However, thrombin generated during cardiopulmonary bypass can activate PAR-1 leading to platelet dysfunction and unwanted bleeding. FLLRN is found to be a potent PAR-1 antagonist. Use of FLLRN and variants has aided the study of platelet aggregation dynamics. Further study may provide a suitable clinical application.
