Description:Cyclin D1 is a key regulator of cell proliferation and its expression and accumulation within cells is under tight control. Cyclin D1 is the regulatory subunit of cyclin-dependent kinases 4 and 6. These activated cyclin dependent kinases then phosphorylate the retinoblastoma protein (Rb) and drive G1 to S phase progression. Cyclin D1 promotes cell proliferation through interaction with transcription factors such as the oestrogen receptor and specificity protein 1 (Sp1). Cell proliferation is extremely sensitive to altered levels of cyclin D1, with even modest changes in its expression having noticeable effects on cell cycle progression.
