Mitochondria contain 4 multimeric electron transfer complexes (CI-CIV) that allow a stepwise transfer of electrons leading to energy production. The electron transfer complexes can form supercomplexes with a core of monomeric CI and dimeric CIII. The purpose of the supercomplex is believed to be direct electron transfer in a discrete unit with additional structural roles in the mitochondria. NDUFA11 is a conserved integral membrane protein that sits at the interface of CI and CIII. Lack of functional NDUFA11 leads to infant death, and encephalocardiomyopathy.
Understanding NDUFA11 roles could be key to understanding mitochondrial diseases. This antibody is for the NDUFA11 homolog (NDUF-11) in the genetically tractable model Caenorhabditis elegans and has already provided insights. The C. elegans NDUF-11 subunit is integral for CI stability and the supercomplex. Loss of complex stability altered mitochondrial function, morphology and ultimately lead to premature death. Further work with this antibody will help understand NDUF-11 functions and possible roles in mitochondrial disorders.
Data: Detection and characterisation of nduf11a from (RNAi)-treated worms.
A reduction of NDUF-11 protein in mitochondria after RNAi is detectable using the anti-nduf11a antibody. A total of 50 µg of isolated mitochondria is loaded per lane. Treatment with RNAi significant reduces detectable nduf11.

ATP5 is used as a loading control.
