It binds to the receptor in a cooperative manner with other molecules and activates it. 5S,12R-HPETE also inhibits the activity of protein kinase C and phospholipase A2. It has been used as a research tool to study the molecular mechanisms of inflammation and pain sensation. 5S,12R-HPETE is also a ligand for the prostaglandin receptor EP4 and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in vitro.
