(R)-(+)-Blebbistatin is a ketone that inhibits the synthesis of fatty acids in bacteria, which are necessary for the production of cell membrane lipids. The compound also inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. (R)-(+)-Blebbistatin has been shown to be an efficient antimicrobial agent against drug-resistant bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The bactericidal effects of the drug have been attributed to its ability to inhibit fatty acid synthesis.
