4-Allyltoluene is a ligand that has been synthesized by the reaction of allyl bromide and ethylmagnesium chloride. It has been used in analytical chemistry as an estragole derivative to study the coordination geometry of zirconium dichloride. 4-Allyltoluene is also a synthetic compound that can be found in carthamus tinctorius and α-pinene. The synthesis of 4-allyltoluene requires hydrochloric acid, which is an acid catalyst, and carthamus tinctorius or α-pinene. Hydrochloric acid reacts with carthamus tinctorius or α-pinene to produce 4-allyltoluene.
4-Allyltoluene has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of carbohydrate synthesis, which may be due to its hydroxyl group.
