Dehydrodeguelin is a natural product that has been used in traditional medicine to treat cancer. It is an inhibitor of cellular proliferation and induces apoptosis in tumor cells. Dehydrodeguelin has inhibitory effects on viruses, such as Epstein-Barr virus, and also inhibits the growth of bacteria. Dehydrodeguelin can be isolated from the ethanol extract of Mundulea sericea by preparative isolation methods. It can also be obtained from the chromanone fraction of this plant by ultrasonic extraction. This compound has shown inhibitory activities in toxicological studies on mammals and birds.
