The product can be racemized to its isomer, 2-phenylbutyric acid, by heating with hydrochloric acid or acetic acid. 3-Methyl-2-phenylbutyric acid has been used in chromatographic analysis for the separation of phenols, amino acids, and other compounds. 3-Methyl-2-phenylbutyric acid also reacts with nucleophiles such as water to form ion pairs.
