It is a potent inducer of liver lesions and mitochondrial membrane potential, which may be due to its ability to stimulate the synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines. α-D-Galactose also has anti-inflammatory properties, as well as structural analysis properties that can be used for diagnosis. α-D-Galactose has been used as a model system for studying oligosaccharides, which are carbohydrates with more than one sugar unit. α-D-Galactose binds to sephadex g-100 by hydrogen bonds and can be detected by laser ablation mass spectrometry.
