Description:

Phenyl p-tolyl sulfide is a cross-coupling agent that has been used in the synthesis of organic compounds. It is formed by the reaction of formic acid and phenyl magnesium bromide, and can be purified by recrystallization from water. Phenyl p-tolyl sulfide undergoes a palladium-catalyzed coupling reaction with alkyl halides to yield aryl chlorides or bromides. The reactivity of this compound is influenced by the temperature and the ligand (e.g., chloride, bromide). Phenyl p-tolyl sulfide has also been shown to be an effective ligand for transition metal complexes, although it is not as reactive as other sulfur-containing ligands such as thiophene or dithiothreitol.
