Product Information
- Pyridine, 3,5-Dimethyl-, 1-Oxide
3,5-Dimethylpyridine N-oxide is a reactive n-oxide that has been synthesized for the first time in this work. This compound can be formed by reacting 3,5-dimethylpyridine with nitric acid. The reaction proceeds through a nitro group to form an amine and an n-oxide group. Kinetic data was obtained from the reaction of 3,5-dimethylpyridine and nitric acid at different temperatures and concentrations. The reaction rate increased with increasing temperature and concentration. The crystal structure of 3,5-dimethylpyridine N-oxide was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The mechanism of this reaction is proposed to involve nucleophilic attack of the amine on the nitro group followed by elimination of water to give the n-oxide product.
