Pluviatolide is a natural product obtained from the roots of Podophyllum hexandrum. It has been shown to have a variety of bioactivities, including anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, and antitumor effects. Pluviatolide is an enantiopure compound that contains two chiral centers. In order to obtain the desired enantiomer, it must undergo asymmetric synthesis. The biosynthesis of pluviatolide is not yet fully understood; however, it has been shown that p450 enzymes play an important role in its formation. A number of chemical structures have also been isolated from pluviatolide as well as secoisolariciresinol, which are both structurally related to pluviatolide.
