Atalaphylline is an analog of theophylline, a natural compound found in tea leaves. It has been shown to have potent anticancer properties in human and Chinese hamster ovary cells by inducing apoptosis, or programmed cell death. Atalaphylline has also been demonstrated to inhibit protein kinases, which are enzymes involved in cancer cell growth and proliferation. This makes it a promising candidate for use as an inhibitor of tumor growth. Moreover, Atalaphylline has been found to be excreted in urine unchanged, indicating that it may have potential as a non-invasive biomarker for monitoring cancer progression or response to therapy. The compound has also been compared with nifedipine, another kinase inhibitor known for its anticancer effects, and found to be more effective at inhibiting the growth of cancer cells.
