Docosatrienoic acid (DTA) is a polyunsaturated fatty acid that belongs to the group of docosatetraenoic acids. It has been shown to have anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective activities in mice. DTA was also found to inhibit the expression of inflammatory cytokines and downregulate the production of reactive oxygen species. This compound has been shown to be effective against nephropathy in women who undergo hemodialysis or renal transplantation procedures. DTA inhibits the activity of malonic acid decarboxylase, an enzyme involved in fatty acid synthesis that produces malonic acid from acetyl-CoA, thereby preventing the production of polyunsaturated fatty acids such as arachidonic acid.
