3-Hydroxy-2-methylpentanoic acid is a metabolite of erythromycin. It is an organic compound that is used in wastewater treatment to remove organic compounds and other pollutants from water. 3-Hydroxy-2-methylpentanoic acid binds to the hydroxyl group on activated carbon and prevents the uptake of organic compounds by the surface of the activated carbon. As it has a lower solubility than other phenolic acids, this process can be carried out more efficiently. The uptake of 3-hydroxy-2-methylpentanoic acid onto activated carbon was found to be dependent on the concentration of carbon source and fatty acids. This method is suitable for use in removing organic compounds from industrial wastewater with low concentrations of phenolic acids, such as propionate or acetate.
