Lexithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits the synthesis of protein. It binds to fatty acids in the bacterial cell membrane and prevents the assembly of proteins, inhibiting protein synthesis. Lexithromycin is used for the treatment of respiratory tract infections, skin infections, and ear infections caused by bacteria. This drug also has been shown to inhibit viral replication, including human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and influenza A virus. Lexithromycin has been shown to be effective against cancer cells in vitro and may be useful as a diagnostic agent for cancer detection or as a growth factor for specific types of cells in culture.
